Volunteer FAQs

Q: How do I get started volunteering?

A: The best way to get started is in our Food Distribution Center (FDC). We have shifts Tuesday – Saturday 8:30-11:30am, and 12:30-3:30pm; (no pm shift is offered). If you are looking to join one of the shifts as an individual or a group, please click here for more information.

 

Q: Are there any age requirements to volunteering at Second Harvest?

A: Yes. Please note that all children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

  • In the FDC kids 14-17 can volunteer
  • At Kids Corner, kids 7-13 years-old can volunteer

 

Q: I have registered on Volunteer Hub, but all Saturday opportunities in the FDC are filled. Can I just show up?

A: We have a volunteer limit at each shift to provide the best experience for all our volunteers. If a shift is filled up on Volunteer Hub, keep checking as there are often cancellations that will open a slot for you.

 

Q: Is there parking at Second Harvest?

A: Volunteer parking is located in the rear of our building; just follow the signs that say “Volunteer Parking.” Overflow parking is to the left when you first turn off of Marine Way to enter our facility. Click here for a map of our location. Parking spaces are limited, so we highly encourage carpooling.

 

Q: Can I bring snacks for my group/self?

A: We have a volunteer break room where you can leave your snacks. Coffee and water are provided by Second Harvest.

 

Q: Should I bring my personal belongings with me?

A: You may bring personal belongings, but we encourage you to leave any valuables at home or locked in your car.

 

Q: What is Kids Corner?

A: Kids Corner is a kid-safe, kid-friendly experience inside the FDC. Kids Corner is all about kids helping kids where you and your child will learn that you are never too young to make a difference. Please click here for more information.

 

Q: I’ve noticed that Kids Corner fills up very far in advance. Do you ever get cancellations?

A: Occasionally spaces will open up. You can call the Volunteer Department at 949-653-2900 periodically to see if any additional spots have become available.

 

Q: How far in advance do you book?
A: For all of our opportunities, we schedule a maximum of 6 months in advance.

 

Q: I’d like to bring in a food donation during my volunteer shift. Is that okay?

A: Yes. We have food donation barrels in our Volunteer Department for your donations. If you have a large donation or would like a receipt, please arrive early to allow time for your donation to be processed. Please click here for more information and to see our most need items list.

 

Q: My son/daughter needs verification of community service hours for school. Can you verify this?

A: Yes. Please speak to a Volunteer Coordinator when you arrive. If the school provides a verification form, bring that with you.

 

Q: We’d like to serve food directly to individuals in the community. Do you have opportunities like that?

A: Second Harvest Food Bank is a food distribution center which distributes food to our community partners who then distribute food to people in need. We don’t distribute food to those in need at this location.
