Our Bold Goal

Together, We Are Ending Hunger

In 2015 Second Harvest developed an aggressive strategic plan aimed at pursuing our Bold Goal of ending hunger in Orange County. We set our sights on increasing the number of meals we provide annually from 20 million to 30 million by 2021, closing the meal gap and ensuring that anyone who is hungry can easily access food in their time of need.

Last year Second Harvest provided a record 26.5 million meals for the hungry, putting us on pace to reach our Bold Goal. The very good news is that we are currently on a 30-million-meal pace and outperforming our goal a year ahead of schedule. Now our challenge is to sustain this pace and make sure we are reaching everyone who needs our help.

Providing food-insecure people with the most basic of needs, nutritious food, is a critical first step in addressing the root causes of hunger. Solving hunger relies upon the ability to leverage every available resource in our community – from private donations to government nutrition programs, to innovative partnerships that will provide additional services to help break the cycle of poverty. Your valued partnership with Second Harvest is essential to the success of our mission. By combining our resources and efforts, we will achieve our ultimate vision – creating a future in which no one goes hungry. Ever.

How We Will Sustain Our Pace and Help Break the Cycle of Poverty

We know that the resources needed to sustain our 30-million-meal pace are within our reach. To get there, we must first increase our capacity, as well as that of our community partners. Critically, we will need to add more cold storage space to capture and process more perishable food.

Together we will:

  • Add trucks, including one more Park-It Market truck, add more staff, recruit more volunteers, and add an additional 3.700 sq. ft. of cold storage space to capture, process and distribute millions of pounds of fresh, nutritious food which would otherwise go to waste
  • Distribute more fresh food through programs like our Mobile and School Pantries, and Park-It Market to ensure that nutritious food quickly and safely reaches children, seniors and families who need it
  • Strengthen and build the capacity of our community partners – the pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters that rely on Second Harvest – so they can increase the number of people they feed
